Boise, ID, USA. The annual Basque festivals – equivalents to the patron saint celebrations that take place in the Basque Country, are celebrated in Boise every year on St Ignatius. Since it is not a holiday in the states, and only in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, the festivities take place on the weekend. This year the festival falls on July 26-28 and everything is ready to go in Boise for the event.
As every year, Saturday will be the main day of the festivities with music, entertainment throughout the day and among other things a kabalkada of dancers in the afternoon carrying a statue of the Basque saint to the St. John’s Cathedral where mass will be celebrated with the Biotzetik choir and the Oñati dancers participating, another strong Boise tradition.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, there will be a picnic in the Municipal Park that will take up the majority of the day, while the evening’s events will happen on the Basque Block on Grove Street, with the reappearance of Ordago, a reference for current Basque musicians in the US and the Diaspora in general. Band members will return to perform together on the last day of this year’s the San Inazio celebration in Boise.
