The novel by Kirmen Uribe, Bilbao-New York-Bilbao (translated into English from Basque by Elizabeth Macklin) has been selected among the top 15 fiction books of the year according to the annual list published by Foyles. The list includes works published in English either originally or in translation. Among the titles selected in 2014 there are the latest published by well-known authors such as Ali Smith, Naomi Wood and the winner of the Man Booker Prize, Richard Flanagan.
Bilbao, Bizkaia. Foyles is one of the oldest and most prestigious bookstore chains in the United Kingdom and they published a list of the most outstanding books of the year. Jonathan Rippen, critic, justifies the Kirmen Uribe's choice saying that the novel by the Basque author is “ingenious and original” and is considers that “the intersection between truth and narration is a rather powerful theme, contrasting the prosaic and the poetic, the pragmatic and the romantic.”
His comments conclude congratulating the Seren Books publishers “for bringing this book to the English speaking reader” (see here).
Bilbao-New York-Bilbao is the first novel by Uribe to be awarded the National Narrative Award. For now, it has been translated into 14 languages. The book was published in English in the United Kingdom this fall by the independent publisher, Seren Books.
