Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bicycles in Focus, by Argentine visual artist, Florencia Alzugaray, is an artistic-photographer that uses “the bicycle as a common thread, and sometimes even as her main protagonist in her images, while others are only a trace or distant, but always present in her visual trips around the world.” The project has been shaped by its author on paper and as an exhibition. The book is includes 240 photos taken in dozens of countries from Japan to Uruguay, via places like the Czech Republic, Chile, Argentina and the Basque Country. The book can be purchased here.
Part of the project is also the exhibition that is traveling through Argentina and like any bike trip, it makes various stops. In the last few months, it has traveled through Rafaela, Santa Fe and Mar del Plata, and by year’s end, it will arrive to Calafate, in Patagonia.
Committed to her artistic work but also to her Basque roots, Florencia Alzugaray, who signs her work Floral Zú would also travel on bike to the Basque community of Argentina and so if offering to send her material to interested Basque clubs, either to present her book, or for the exhibit. “The project is 100% independent and self-managed, emerging with all of her professionalism in tow, but from the deeper passion of wanting to transmit my universes, the real ones, along with the fantasy ones.”
Basque Roots
Originally from Oronoz, Nafarroa, Francisco Alzugaray, Florencia’s Great-grandfather, died in Buenos Aires at the age of 87. While the artist has not retained a family bond with Euskal Herria, when speaking about her roots she highlights “touching references,” about his being Basque, like “He reached old age vigorously, like the oak faithful to his Basque race” in his obituary, where Buenos Aires said farewell to Francisco Alzugaray. She cannot conceal her admiration for the beauty of the Basque Country that she registered with her camera when she visited there personally.
