Palo Alto, CA. After participating in the 30th anniversary celebration of the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center, the bertsolaris Amets Arzallus and Julio Soto will be at Stanford on Tuesday afternoon, where they will talk about this Basque oral tradition as well as provide a live demonstration. The event entitled, “Basque Troubadours,” has been organized by the Basque Language program at the university in hopes of bringing not only the Basque students, but the student body in general, closer to this aspect of Basque culture.
The evening will begin with the screening of a ten minute trailer of the documentary entitled, Bertsolari, directed by Asier Altuna. Following, Arzallus and Soto will lead the discussion on bertsolarismo and its relationship with oral improvisers in other languages such as minstrels and the repentistas. Finally the two will sing some bertsos live. These verses will be translated into English and Spanish.
“Basque Troubadours” will begin at 17:15 in Pigott Hall (Bldg. 260, Rm. 252). Organized by the department of Iberian and Latin American Cultural Studies at the University as well as the Etxepare Basque Institute.
