Tomorrow, September the 6th, the Santa Rosa Basque Club will host its 4th annual picnic. It’s going to be a special event in a year the State of Nevada is celebrating its 150th anniversary, a fact that will be present in this Basque ‘festa’, as Richard Gavica, president of the Club, told Euskalkultura.com.
Paradise Valley, USA. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the land that welcomed you is not an everyday event. That’s the reason why the Santa Rosa Basque Club will blend their annual celebration and their land’s birthday. “We’re going to remember those who arrived to Nevada in the 1800’s,” said Gavica. “There are a lot of Basque families with a long history in this area like the Echeverrias, the Gaztanagas, the Arriolas…”
Along with honoring their predecessors and their new homeland, there will be two remarkable events at the picnic. The first one will be the presence of Tom Davidson, a weight-lifter from Reno (NV) that will perform for the first time in the area: “He contacted and told us that he wanted to come. I’m very happy for that, I’ve never seen him in Winnemucca,” said Susan Gavica. And the second one will be the concert by Amuma Says No that, even though they also played in Santa Rosa last year, “it’s something that everybody enjoys.”
Regarding the food, Gavica said that “this year we made a couple hundreds of pounds of chorizo.” And in addition to the classic Basque sausage, there will also be burgers, sirloin sandwiches, paella, and garlic soup.
The day that will start with a mass at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and dancers from Boise and Elko will also perform in front of the 250 attendees the organizers expect. “We usually have between 200 and 300 people, so we expect more or less the same amount of people,” said Susan Gabica.
