This coming Sunday, February 7, the biggest sporting event in the US will be celebrated in Santa Clara, California. The 50th Superbowl is expected to be a record breaking TV phenomenon. However, the Euskaldunak from Miami, Florida are more focused on the finishing touches of their first 'Kirol Jaialdia,' a Basque rural sport picnic aiming at raising awareness of the importance of Basque sports in this state, in addition to spending a great day together.
Miami, FL. This coming Sunday, February the 7th, from 11:00am to 8:00pm, the Royal Palm Island will become a Basque village for a day, full of bascos, herri kirolak, euskal musika, a mus competition, and great atmosphere. The first Miamiko Kirol Jaialdia, or Basque rural sport picnic, comes into play at a time when Jai Alai in the Sunshine state hangs by a thread, awaiting, another year, the result of the negotiations at the Florida House of Representatives.
But instead of just waiting, the Euskal Etxea of Miami decided to be proactive and to attract the attention of fellow Miamians. “Bring family and friends,” reads the announcement of the organization. “It's not just for Basque people.”
