‘Bascos for Boobies’ is the name of a group of Basque-Americans from Chino, California who have joined forces to raise $20,000 for breast cancer research. To do so, they’ve organized a Breast Cancer Walk through the city, for October 3. “We’ve lost many loved ones to breast cancer in the Basque community, and some are still fighting it. So it’s very dear to our hearts. That’s one of the motivations for us to organize it,” Anne Gariador spokeswoman for the group told EuskalKultura.com.

Chino, CA, USA. The group hopes to raise $20,000 that will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, in New York−“an organization rated A+ by CharityWatch,” as the group explains on their Facebook page. Ninety-one cents per every dollar donated will go to research, “it’s the highest rated organization for breast cancer.”

They are aware of the fact that $20,000 is not a mere trifle, that’s why they might keep the fundraiser open until the end of the year. Although, as Gariador said, “we hope to get most of the money the day of the walk.”

The walk

The route is 7.4 miles rountrip, starting at the Chino Basque Club (15181 Sierra Bonita Lane, Chino, CA), to the Chino Valley Medical Center (5451 Walnut Avenue, Chino, CA), and back to the Basque Club. Check-in will be at 7:30am, with the event starting at 8am.  The event is expected to be over by 3:30pm, because the participants will stop at some specific bars and restaurants (like Centro Basco, for instance) who want to make a contribution. There is a minimum registration fee of $100 that will directly go to the donation funds. So far, around 40 people have registered to participate.

Other ways to help

If, for any reason, one cannot be part of the walk, there are other ways to help, like sponsoring the event – there are around 10 sponsors that have donated a minimum of $500 each − or going to the Basque Club that day, since all the money from the sale of refreshments will also be donated by the Euskal Etxea to the BCRF.

The organizers will also serve dinner at the club, beginning at 7pm, for $50 per person. A percentage of the dinner proceeds will also be donated. The menu will consist of paella and steak, and wine will be included. The bar will open an hour before the dinner starts and, afterwards, there will be a 50/50 drawing and Candlelight Memorials.

* Organizers request that you register before September 27
