Joining in on similar ceremonies in other places around the world, a group of people in Berlin, Basques and Germans, commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika by German and Italian aircraft, allies of General Francisco Franco, with a simple event that took place in the Guernicaplatz. They laid a wreath of flowers and read poems in Basque and German with live music in tribute and memory of the victims of the fatal episode.
Berlin, Germany. Since April 26 was a workday this year, the event was pushed back to last weekend and took place on April 30, in the Guernicaplatz in the German capital.
Accompanied by wonderful weather, the music and poetry were the protagonists of the event with a poetry reading with poems by Bitoriano Gandiaga, Gabriel Aresti and Bertoldt Brecht in Basque and in German. Music provided by Jone Bolibar on the clarinet and Ivan Casado on the cello also brought a special touch of beautiful serenity to the event.
Along with Berlin Basque club members, the event was also supported by the presence of entities like the KFSR (Kämpfer und Freunde der Spanischen Republik) and the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gesellschaft. This year the director of culture at the Spanish Embassy in Berlin, Rosa Velazquez Alvarez, was also present along with the delegate in Germany of the Catalan Generalitat, Marie Kapretz.
