As part of the University of the Basque Country’s summer school options, Basque Yourself International Summer School is making its debut and provides a unique opportunity to delve in to the Basque culture. The course will take place from June 26-July 15 in Donostia and will include top-notch professors: Bernardo Atxaga, anthropologist William Douglass, Kepa Junkera….Classes will be taught in English and tuition is 1,800 Euros (Etxepare and EHU will provide up to 20 scholarships).
Classes will be taught in English, but participants will also have simultaneous translation provided in Basque and Spanish, or to English in the case that presenters don’t speak English. The panel of professors of this course are top-notch, and first-rate experts in each of their fields: writer Bernardo Atxaga, anthropologist William Douglass, musician Kepa Junkera, historian and Diaspora expert Pedro Oiarzabal, dantzari Oier Araolaza, art critic Peio Aguirre….Complete program, here.
Cost of tuition is 1,800 Euros and the EHU has 10 scholarships of 250 Euros each for students at universities affiliated with EHU or who have Basque studies anywhere in the world. In addition, there are another 10 scholarships also for 250 Euros a piece for lodging. Complete information on these scholarships is available here.
Students will also be given the opportunity to reside at Olarain, for an additional 700 Euros (or 1,200 Euros for a single room).
Mari Jose Olaziregi, director for the Promotion of Euskera at the Etxepare Institute is in charge of the course and explained to EuskalKultura.com that the course is aimed at anyone interested in the Basque culture, and she believes that it will be very interesting for university students in the Basque Diaspora.
“Participants will receive 60 hours of instruction, plus the possibility to participate in other summer courses for free. In the afternoon, they will have Euskera instruction that will be theoretical for three days a week, plus more practical course on the other two days, with outings to the market, fronton….” They will also have outings on the weekends in order to get to know the Basque Country.
