Invited by teachers, Andrea Bella, Maria Laura Moreno Sasiain and Martin Zabalza, some 20 Basque students participated in the first Basque Weekend at the Santa Lucia del Este beach in Uruguay. Everyone was very satisfied with how successful it was and the organizers told EuskalKultura.com that they’d like to make this an annual event.
Montevideo, Uruguay. Students from Montevideo and San Jose participated in a first of its kind activity invited by teachers Andrea Bella, Maria Laura Moreno Sasiain and Martin Zabalza. The first Basque weekend took place on December 5 and 6 at the vacation colony on the coastal location of Santa Lucia del Este in the department of Canelones.
“In Uruguay, FIVU organizes Udaleku every year, but that is for children. Inspired by this experience, we decided to do something similar but for adult students. This is how we came up with Basque Weened,” Andrea Bella explained to EuskalKultura.com.
Organizers were very satisfied with how it went. In their own words, “the place, activities, the integration, organization…everything went very well and participants were very happy. We carried out the program and we were able to complete it, so everything went very well.” When seeing the results, the Uruguaiko Euskara Ikasleak are already planning to do it again and make it an annual event. “Maybe the next one will take place next spring; and we will probably make it a day longer, at the students request,” Bella explained.
Information on the weekend and in general on the activities of the Uruguaiko Euskara Taldea can be seen on their blog: Uruguaiko Azken Berriak, managed by teacher, Andrea Bella.
