La Floresta, Uruguay. The November 30-December 1 weekend the “Uruguaiko Euskara Ikasleak” (Basque students in Uruguay) group celebrated another Basque Language Weekend, this time at the El Hidalgo Camping in La Floresta. This is a language immersion activity that is now in its 5th edition, with very clear objectives: “submerge yourself in and speak Euskera: learn and use new vocabulary; learn customs and elements of the culture of Euskal Herria like music, song, sports, geography and contests,” being the teacher organizers Andrea Bella, Martín Zabalza, María Laura Moreno Sasiain and Gabriel Arce.
With these objectives, students and teachers already began the task of decorating and making the place Basque as soon as they arrived. During the weekend, participants also prepared their meals, and after these collective activities held workshops, played games and contests, and went for walks, everything practicing their Basque.
On Sunday morning, the students and teachers were visited by Basque club members and representatives from Haize Hegoa (Montevideo), Ibai Ondoko Etxea (Carmelo) and San Joseko Euskaldunak Taldea (San José). There was also a bonfire with Basque songs thanks to musician/teacher Martin Zabalza.
