Bilbao, Bizkaia. The continuous reading of Basque classics organized for over a decade by the Euskaltegi Bilbo Zaharra took place yesterday in its usual place: the Arriaga Theater in the Bizkaian capital. This fourteenth edition of the event featured the first book published in Basque Linguae Vasconum Primitiae, by Bernat Etxepare from Behe Nafarroa and published in 1545. The reading gathered some 200 Euskaltzales who, continuously read giving voice to this significant text.
In this tribute to the language of Euskal Herria, the Diaspora could not be left out, the “eighth province,” where Basque also exists, persists and even extends and grows. The participation of the Diaspora is thanks to the Etxepare Basque Institute, tis director, Irene Larraza; and through the Euskara Munduan Program coordinated by José Francisco Zinkunegi.
