Los Angeles, USA. Fermin Muguruza (Kortatu, Negu Gorriak) decided to stop playing live to focus in other projects after his 2013 No More Tour, “so, these concerts become exceptional and I enjoy them a lot,” in his own words before the LA show, at The Virgil. He was the big act in both cities, where the audience enjoyed a mixed set-list of classics like Sarri, Sarri, En la línea del frente, and Zu atrapatu arte, newer compositions like Plastic turkey or Yalah, yalah Ramallah!, and even a cover: The Clash’s Jimmy Jazz, “because I grew up with them,” he said. Such a varied selection of songs made a travel in time out of his show.
“Musically speaking he is a genius, he has composed all kinds of songs so it’s impossible to classify him,” pointed out his long-time friend Ceci Bastida. “But what I like the most from Fermin is that he is absolutely consistent with what he sings.” Muguruza was very thankful to the audience and the people that drove all their way to LA from as far as San Diego, California and even Tijuana, Mexico.
“I was very excited when he (Fermin) told me to tour with him and I am really enjoying the experience,” stated Bastida before going onstage. The same way, Koldo Soret, Usua de la Fuente (Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado), and Tania de Sousa highlighted the importance of coming to the States under Muguruza’s wing. “Coming to the US after our first album is almost unbelievable. We have to thank Fermin for that,” said the latter. And Soret added: “Joining Fermin in this tour is amazing for us.” On top of that, last time the band came to LA the city left them with a bad taste in their mouth, since they had to cancel their concert because some of their instruments were stolen.
Coyote and Tornado were the opening band and, in a 40-minutes-show, they played all the songs of their only album (Niña Coyote eta Chico Tornado) except Izardust, being Lainoa, Txaman, and Caballo loco the most powerful ones onstage. They even covered Jimi Hendrix’s Foxy lady bringing their touch to the song. “We really like it here; California has always been an attractive land for us. This is just the beginning, we’ll come back,” said drummer De la Fuente after the show.
Tania de Sousa and her bandmates played most of their album too. Baso ilunetik and Ez diot esan inori sounded especially good. The pop-rock band always shows its rocker facet in front of the audience, even though they played Lady Gaga’s Bad romance. Ceci Bastida, for her part, filled the night with an eclectic sound mixing trumpets, guitars, deejay scratches, and percussions and singing in Spanish and in English.
An audience of around 50 people enjoyed the second and last American show of the tour, before the musicians departed to Mexicali, Mexico. “I feel really excited when I help younger bands pave their way. I have always liked it, even when the shows are small, like tonight,” remarked Muguruza before leaving.
