The third edition of the Basque Film Festival organized by the Gernika Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein Basque club begins this Thursday. Over four days, they will show five films made in the Basque Country: Lasa eta Zabala, Amaren eskuak, Eceverriatik Etxeberriara, Ateak zabalduz, and will close with Loreak that has been nominated for an Oscar. In addition to this the Basque club in Berlin will also provide other activities during the month including talks, screenings, writers’ meetings and recitals.
Berlin, Germany. Beginning on Thursday and running through Sunday, Berlin will become the capital of Basque film thanks to the third edition of the festival organized by the Gernika Deutsch-Baskischer Kulturverein Basque club. As in previous years, the sessions will take place at the Kino Moviemento Theater, the oldest one in the city. Over four days, three films and two documentaries will be shown.
For starters, on Thursday, November 5 Lasa eta Zabala will be shown, presented by its director Pable Malo himself. On Friday, November 6, writer Karmele Jaio will present the film Amaren eskuak, based on her novel by the same name, and directed in 2013 by Mireia Gabilondo.
On Saturday, November 7, it will be the documentary Echevarriatik Etxeberriara’s turn. It director, Ander Iriarte, will be in Berlin to present it in person. Finally, on Sunday, November 8 two films will be shown. First the documentary Ateak zabalduz, directed by Juamni Gutierrez, who will present this film on the occupation.
To close the festival, the film Loreak, the first Basque film to be nominated for an Oscar that is currently being shown in the USA and is in the running for an official nomination.
More activities
Basque club sources also reported that there is a flurry of activity at the club, besides the film festival. This Friday, November 6, writer Karmele Jaio will hold a reading of her work and will give a talk. On the other hand, on November 17, historian Ludger Mees will present the documentary Una esvastica sobre el Bidasoa, and will give a talk on the topic.
On November 27, writers Irati Elorrieta and Danele Sarriugarte will give a talk where they will talk about their work and the city of Berlin.
