St Pierre, Saint Pierre et Miquelón. Having to adapt to the health crisis, but finally after a time of uncertainty, the Basque Festival in Saint Pierre et Miquelon will take place.  The event will be August 10-16, strictly following the stipulations set by health authorities, social distancing, wearing masks and using hand sanitizer that will be made available all over the festival grounds.

Michel Goicoechea told EuskalKultura.eus from the Basque club that due to COVID-19 the festivities will be more local.  “We had hoped to have the txaranga of Ezpeleta and pilotaris from Euskal Herria, but those have been pushed back until next year.  In their place, we will have local musicians and pilotaris, and entertainment will also be provided by the dantzaris of Orok Bat and the voices of our Basque choir.”

During the week, there will be workshops as every year and Sunday the 16th will be the main day with herri-kirolak (sokatira, txingas, etc), traditional Basque food, dantzaris and public dance although this year’s musicians will not be Basque.  Also, with “Canada’s border closed at least until the end of July, and after that we are not sure how things will evolve.  It will be a more local festival than ever,” Goicoechea concludes.
