The Basque language and culture lecturer in the Hungarian city of Szeged will kick off “Baszk Kulturalis Napok” today, three days dedicated to Basque culture. The program unites music, dance, film and gastronomy; and will take place in Szeged, as well as in Budapest. Today, there will be an open workshop on Basque and Hungarian dancing, in Szeged; while there will be a “trikipoteo” a night of Basque culture in Budapest. On Saturday, the event will close with a screening of the documentary Gazta Zati Bat as well as a Basque music festival, also in Budapest.

Szeged, Hungary.  Basque sounds and flavors will be in Hungary from today through Saturday, thanks to the Basque Culture Days organized by the Etxepare Basque Institute’s Basque lecturer at the University of Szeged.  That is where the activities organized by lecturer, Izaskun Perez, will begin tomorrow which will move to Budapest the day after.  The aim is to bring Basque culture out of the classroom and to acquaint the Hungarians with it through film, music, dance and a “trikipoteo” that promises to enliven the streets of the Hungarian capital.

Today’s events will take place at the Millennium Café where the Basque and Hungarian dance workshop will begin at 7pm.  It is open to the public.  On behalf of the Basques, music will be played by Xabier Losada, Andrea Losada and Izaskun Perez, who will play the trikitixa, alboka and the txalaparta. The Hungarian music will be provided by the folk group SAML.

Tomorrow, the festivities will move to Budapest where a “trikipoteo” will begin at 7pm at the Bontxo bar and will move through adjacent streets.  There, besides music, there will be a Basque pintxo tasting, followed by an informal talk on Basque culture that will include information on the language, the history and the traditions of Euskal Herria.  The night will end with live music and dance.

Finally, on Saturday, the documentary Gazta Zati Bat will be shown at the “The Drunken Sailor” bar in Budapest.  This will begin at 7pm for an evening that will not only include film but also another Basque and Hungarian dance workshop.
