Berlinale kicks off this Friday in the German capital, one of the most important film festivals in Europe and worldwide. This year’s program of events includes a very special day for Basque culture, “Basque Day” that was organized in collaboration with the Basque Government, the Etxepare Basque Institute, and the Basque Culinary Center. It will take place on Monday and will include presentations of the Basque food industry, a concert by Txalapartari Felipe Ugarte, director of the film “Mugaritz Soundtrack,” that is on display at the festival. Berlin’s Basque club will also contribute to the Basque ambience with a concert by Ruper Ordorika this Saturday.

Donostia-San Sebastian.  The Basque Government, the Etxepare Basque Institute, and the Basque Culinary Center (BCC) have all worked together to organize “A Day in Euskadi” at Berlin’s Film Festival  that will introduce gastronomy, products and Basque culture.  The event is the result of collaboration between sections of the San Sebastian Film Festival, “Culinary Zinema,” and “Kulinarisches Kino” of the Berlinale section. The event will take place at the Spanish Embassy.

The day will begin with a presentation of the Basque food industry and a roundtable on “Gastronomy, art and society,” that will include the director of the Basque Culinary Center, Joxe Mari Aizega, the director of San Sebastian’s Film Festival, Jose Luis Rebordinos, and chefs Andoni Luis Aduriz, Elena Arzak and Eneko Atxa, along with Thomas Struck, director of “Kulinarisches Kino".

Mugaritz Soundtrack

In addition, musician Felipe Ugarte, co-director of the film “Mugaritz Soundtrack” and its composer will give a concert along with txalaparta player Beñat Iturrioz and dancer Mike Aristegui, member of Berlin’s Basque club.  Those attending the seminar,  including Blanca Urgell Councilor of Culture, will enjoy a lunch prepared by Elena Arzak and Eneko Atxa, who will make pintxos live.

That night, after the premier of “Mugaritz Soundtrack,” Andoni Luis Aduriz will provide dinner for 200 at the Berlinale.

Ruper Ordorika in concert

Besides “Basque Day,” Berlin will also enjoy another Basque event on the weekend, thanks to Ruper Ordorika who will give a concert on Saturday.  The musician, from Oñate, was invited by Berlin’s Euskal Etxea, and he will perform at the Medien Galerie presenting his latest work, “Hodeien artean.”

From there he will travel to Konstanz, where he will give another concert on Monday at the University of Konstanz where he will also give a lecture on language and Basque culture, also supported by the Etxepare Basque Institute.
