Seventy-eight years after the tragic attack by the Nazis on the Bizkaian village, the Bombing of Gernika still lives in the memory of many Basques, particularly in the Diaspora where some of the last survivors reside. Once again, many Basque clubs held events to remember the victims of Gernika and to reaffirm it as a symbol of peace and rejection of wars. Donostia-San Sebastian. Basque clubs around the world remembered the victims of the Bombing of Gernika that took place on April 26, 1937. The Nazi planes, General Franco’s allies, attached the Bizkaian village on Monday, market day, causing numerous victims and leveling its streets. Days before, Italians, also Franco’s allies, had attached Durango also leaving a trail of civilian casualties. Both towns, above all Gernika, because of the mythic picture by Pablo Picasso, have become antiwar symbols.
