Basque classes began at Zaragoza’s Basque club last Monday, and organizers are very satisfied with the community response. There were 17 students taking classes this spring and the class became a place to have a really good time according to Igor Zabala, club member. Igor himself, along with another member, Mikel Bergara are this year’s teachers. “There has always been a lot of interest in Euskera here, and request for classes were always coming in, so we finally decided Aurten bai! Yes this year!,” they told EuskalKultura.com..
Zaragoza, Spain. On last Monday, the bar A Flama in Zaragoza became an euskaltegi for an hour, thanks to the work and art done for Basque classes organized by the local Basque club. “The bar let us use a room and that is where we teach classes. And afterwards we stay for a while in the bar to practice,” Igor said.
The student profile is varied: from Basque living in Zaragoza, that know some Basque, to people who go to the Basque Country often and want to learn more, or children of Basque that have been in Zaragoza and who want to learn their parents’ language. “In any case, even though students know something, we always start at zero,” said Zabala.
Being able to teach Basque classes has been a dream of the members of the Basque club for years, and finally this year we are able to carry them out with the help of HABE’s Euskara Munduan program and materials provided by them.
Classes are free and anyone wanting to enroll can do so online, filling out this form on the club’s Facebook page or by emailing: euskalzaragoza@gmail.com.
