Basque autumn in Bordeaux and Pau: Garikoitz Mendizabal, Aitor Furundarena, jazz and exhibit on Basque dance “Soka”

This fall the Aquitaine.eus project brings a Basque air to Bordeaux and Pau, two cities with the largest Basque Diaspora presence in the south of France.  Supported by the Etxepare Institute, and Euskal Kultur Erakundea, in Bordeaux an exhibit on the Donostia Jazz Festival will be presented along with a workshop on traditional Basque music with Mendizabal and Furundarena.  In addition, in Lons, near Pau, the exhibit “Soka” will also be available to view. 

Bordeaux, France.   Two of the cities in the south of France with the largest Basque Diaspora presence, like Bordeaux and Pau, will add the Aquitaine.eus project this fall and activities at Basque clubs, Eskualdunon Biltzarra in Bordeaux and Lagunt eta Maita in Pau.  Combining all of these offerings, the fall provides several possibilities for Basque culture lovers in both places. 

Aquitaine.eus is a project supported by the Euro-region Aquitania-Euskadi comprised by the Basque Government and the Region Nouvelle Aquitaine, along with the Etxepare Basque Institute  and Euskal Kultur Erakundea-Institut Culturel Basque (EKE). Its goal is to support Basque artistic presentations in Aquitaine and the cooperation between creators and agents in Aquitaine and Euskadi.  The activities began on November 4th with a concert by the Iñaki Salvador Trio at the Le Rocher de Palmer Cultural Center in the outskirts of Bordeaux.

Also in Bordeaux, the display, Jazzaldia 50 Ansl, dedicated to the first 50 years of the Jazzaldia in Donostia will also be available to visit through November 25 also at the Le Rocher de Palmer Cultural Center.  On November 22 and 23, txistulari from Zestoa, Garikoitz Mendizabal and accordionist from Ordizia, Aitor Furundarena will teach a workshop on traditional Basque music.  Their visit will also include a concert based on their joint project “Bi Poliedro,” on the 23rd.

In Pau, the exhibit “Soka” a multimedia exhibit about Basque dance has been open since last Monday.  The exhibit will be open until December 10th at the Mediateka in Lons (Bearn), on its first tour outside of Euskal Herria. The exhibit created with the help of the Euskal Kultur Erakundea and the Provincial Government of Gipuzkoa and DSS2016, is presented in four languages, Basque, French, Spanish and English, and over the coming months will travel as part of the Aquitaine.eus project.

Together with specific activities, both center offer year-round Basque classes, as well as online, Basque dance, choirs, children’s activities and much more.
