The “Fiesta del Ternero y Día de la Yerra” in Ayacucho enjoys a long tradition in the province of Buenos Aires. During the week, residents declare themselves in a state of “yerra” and symbolically open their gates to greet visitors. The festival has two objectives: the first is calf branding; and the other to exhibit the goods of local growers and artists. This year, on the 41st anniversary of the event, the local Basque club also held its traditional “Peña Vasca.” There were also street performances where Basque and Gaucho rhythms merged, thanks to the Basque club dancers.

Ayacucho, Argentina.  The Euskal Odola Basque club in Ayacucho held its “Peña Vasca” on March 8 as part of the forty-first “Fiesta del Ternero y Día de la Yerra.”  “La Peña” adds Basque color to the local landscape, which recorded a huge turnout--not only of local artists, but also in the number of aspiring queens that were presented at the beginning of the event

Participating artists included the group “Los Chamameceros” made up of Hugo Arias, Agustín Cadenas, Rodolfo García and Agustín Bertoli.  The foursome played a large repertoire that invited audience members to dance.  Another hit was the performance by the Pessi brothers, Matias and Nicolas, who were described by organizers “those who brought 'sureros' (Southern songs) to the Basque night in Ayacucho.”

When the moment came, music flooded the room at the Euskal Etxea and the local dantzaris performed a colorful exhibition of dances under the direction of Belen Zabaleta.  "The 41st edition of Fiesta del Ternero y Día de la Yerra lasts through Sunday and the Basque club will also be present at its closing.  During the parade, that will take place on Sunday at 10 in the morning, the txikis will travel through the streets of the city on a float and the dancers, along with those from Gure Etxea in Tandil, will accompany them, adorning the scene with their costumes and choreography,” according to club member Maria Nilda Ilarregui.
