The International Day of Euskera and the programs organized around the world to celebrate it are at the Forefront of our news.  Along with events in Argentina and other countries, we are also highlighting the conference that begins tomorrow in Montevideo called “Euskera Day – The Basque Book in America,” that will include the first meeting of Basque publishers on the American continent including Ekin, and Lauburu in Argentina, Euskal Erria in Uruguay; and the William A. Douglass Center for Basque Studies Press in Reno.  Along with Basque Government support, this year marks the first time that the event also enjoys support from the Government of Navarre with the presence of its delegate in Brussels, Mikel Irujo.

Montevideo Uruguay.   In fact, the salutation words will be m ade by Mikel Irujo himself, a person who has very strong ties with the Basque Diaspora, himself born in Caracas, and son of two very relevant personalities in the cultural life of the Basque communities in Venezuela, and Uruguay, Pello Irujo and Arantzazu Ametzaga. He will deliver the welcoming remarks along with the vice-minister of Linguistic Policy in the Basque Government, Patxi Baztarrika.  The event was organized by the Euskal Erria Basque club in Montevideo with support from the governments of Navarre and Euskadi.

After the welcoming remarks, the first presentation entitled “Euskera in Exile (1936-1975): History of Euskera Day,” will be done by historian Xabier Iurjo Ametzaga, Mikel’s brother, from the University of Nevada, Reno.

In addition to the participation and sponsorship by the Government of Navarre, the conference will also be the site of the first meeting of Basque-American publishers including the historic Ekin and the young Lauburu in Argentina, a new publisher Euskal Erria in Uruguay, and the William A.
