From the beginning on Friday of the Fair, the Euskal Etxea in Barcelona will be in Durango, thanks to an initiative by the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad and Gerediaga Elkartea.  The goal is to raise awareness of the cultural work done in the so called Eighth Basque Province.  The Barcelona Basque club, carries out several music festivals, Basque film and literature series in the Catalan capital, making it a privileged platform for Basque artists and creators.  Now, all of the musicians, writers, filmmakers, artists, etc that have been through the club are invited to visit them at their stand to publicize their well done work.

Barcelona, Catalonia.   The Basque club in Barcelona will have its own stand this year at the Durango Book Fair to share the work and activities that it has carried out: music festivals, literature and film series, Basque classes, txalaparta lessons, conferences, film screenings and much more.

“Our Basque club is a platform, a showcase of Basque culture in Catalonia.  Through our activities we try to provide Basque artists a basis to publicize their work in Barcelona,” Ekaitz Garate, the club’s cultural coordinator told EuskalKultura.com.  “Over the year many musicians, writers, filmmakers, politicians, and associations have visited the club.  Now we would like to invite them all to come by the stand to help us make people aware of what we do.”

A Basque club every year

The presence of the Barcelona Basque club at Durango is part of a project supported by the Basque Government’s Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad, and Gerediaga Elkartea.  It is a project that looks to the future and will continue to invite a Basque club every year to present what they do at the fair.  The Durango book Fair is the perfect spot for this as it is visited by thousands from all over the Basque Country annually.

The Barcelona Basque Club stand will be next to that of the Basque Government where new publications from their Editorial Service will also be showcased.  Among these, as every year, it will be the Urazandi collection, focused on the Diaspora that this year includes: Basque Exile in America, by Koldo San Sebastian and Basques in Cuba, by William A. Douglass. Both authors will be at the stand to sign copies of their books.

William Douglass (co-founder of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno) will also present his book: Nevadako Kontakizunak (Tales of Nevada) published by Pamiela.
