Fans of Basque literature in Barcelona will now have a new place to get together, with the beggining of the sessions of Irakurle Kluba, a book club for Basque literature. It was created by the Basque teachers at the Official Language School, at the UB and UAB universities and the Basque club along with HABE. They will get together once a month to discuss works like The Accordionist’s Son, Bilbao-New York-Bilbao, or A Streetcar to SP.
Barcelona, Catalonia. A group of Basque teachers in Barcelona have created a Book Club in the city dedicated to Basque literature. Club members will read a book each month and will get together to talk about it and debate issues that the book raises.
Readers will be able to read these works in their preferred language, as explained to EuskalKultura.com by one of its organizers, Jon Elordi, Basque club Basque teacher, “The books can be read in Euskera, Catalan or Spanish, if the translation exists. Afterwards the sessions will be held in Spanish or Catalan so people that doesn´t speak Basque can also participate.”
The goal of the Irakurle Kluba is “to introduce Basque literature to people outside of the Basque Country, to get it out in the world,” Elordi continued. “To show that what is written in Basque is part of universal literature and to enjoy this treasure. In our case, it seems very important to us that this heritage is present in public libraries in Barcelona.”
The club is open to anyone who wishes to participate. You only have to meet two requirements: have a library card (free) and commit to attend the sessions. The first meeting, the club presentation, will be held on October 27.
To sign up go to the library (Comte d'Urgell, 145-147) or call 93 453 98 81 or email: b.barcelona.ac@diba.cat.
