Balmaseda, Bizkaia. The invitation that we received explains that the book describes the presence of hundreds of Balmasedans in America, since 1492 through the beginning of the 20th century. Almost half a millennium influenced the activities of discoverers, soldiers, emigrants, merchants, navigators, businessmen, merchants, officials, servants, secretaries, religious, adventurers, bankers, etc. born in Balmaseda and who have marked the history of the New World, and also their hometown with their presence.”
Some went to America as charges of the court, militia, judiciary or civil or religious institutions. Many were merchants. There was also no shortage of “soldiers of fortune,” in the sixteenth century, the “founders,” in the 17th century, the “traders” of the 18th century, or “pioneers” in Mexico independent of the 19th century. Some will become powerful businessmen or influential bankers.
More than a few, having triumphed in the American adventure, did not forget their hometown, and sent donations, created assets or made investments of all kinds. Their legacy is still seen in the current Balmaseda, through the “route of the Indianoak,” with which the work ends.
The presentation of Balmaseda in America by Julia Gomez Prieto will be on Wednesday, December 4th at 7:30pm at the Balmaseda Kultur Etxea (San Juan Plaza 1).
