Bahía Blanca, Argentina. In every Basque club there is a “txoko,” or a place for all to meet, where there is always Mus, maybe a pintxo or a glass of wine. Dantzaris, pelotaris, txikis, Muslaris, share this space at one time or another during the week, with the Basque club community. During this time of quarantine in Argentina, people are missing these moments. That is why the board of directors of the Union Vasca in Bahia Blanca will host its first “Virtual Txoko:” “This is a space to see each other and share the spirit of the txoko with friends that we are missing so much,” organizers said.
The idea is to hold a gathering via Zoom. The first “Virtual Txoko,” will take place on Friday, June 5th beginning at 8pm. It is open to the public and proposes to share tortilla and songs, each from his/her home. There will be a coordinator, this time former dantzari, Ignacio Irastorza, who will explain and guide the activity, facilitating greetings, songs and a toast. Zoom includes a chat so song lyrics can be shared with everyone who would like to participate.
If this first experience is well received, the organizer will repeat the gathering once a month, with the next one being in July, this time to celebrate San Fermin. In the meantime, they are also organizing other virtual activities with the various club dance groups, as well as dinners for the adults and intermediates, and Fridays for snacks and story time for the txikis. They are also thinking about generating other spaces among the groups because the Basque community in Bahia Blanca is finding it hard to deprive their enthusiasm to get together, even if it means virtually.
