Buenos Aires, Argentina. The “Buenos Aires Celebrates the Basque Country” surpassed itself this year, and not only in numbers. The Basque clubs in Argentina showed their commitment to the event and were presented on Sunday on stage and at the stands, converting the 200 meters of the Avenida de Mayo into an authentic Basque festival. When we talk about Basque clubs, we are talking about those that traveled 200-300 kilometers in order to participate, but also those that traveled more than 1,000 kilometers, as in the case of Basque clubs in Patagonia, who were also present at this year’s BAC festivities.
Arantxa Anitua, Laurak Bat’s president as the organizers stressed this large number of clubs and added, “We are delighted that more volunteers get involved each time and that this festival provides visibility of this united and strong community. We are creating a “country brand,” giving testimony in the Argentine media, last week and today, of the event that was covered by some 40 local media, displaying the Basque Diaspora that is so active and solid!.”
In regards to institutional representation, accompanying the Basque community in Argentina was a Delegation from the Basque Government in Argentina-Mercosur, with the participation of the Delegate Sara Pagola, and the Director of the Basque Community Aboard, Gorka Alvarez Aranburu, and the Government of Navarre with the presence of Miriam Veguillas. FIVU, the Federation of Basque Institutions in Uruguay, was also represented by its president, Juan Pedro Arin.
In regards to local authorities, the National Attorney General, Eduardo Casal, came; the Secretary of Citizen Development, Matias Lopez; the General Director of Communities, Adrian Varela; Mercedes Barbara, Chief of Staff of the Undersecretary of Human Rights and Cultural Pluralism of the City; and Juan Sarrafian, president of the Federation of Collectivities in Argentina.
