Bogota, Colombia. Aurelio Iragorri Hormaza, passed away on Monday in Bogota at the age of 83 from COVID-19. Colombian politician born in Popayan, in the department of Cauca, who throughout his great political life served among others in the positions of governor, national minister and senator of the republic, as well as president of the Senate and as a member of that chamber for 28 ears. A civil engineer by profession, he was the founder of the Partido de la U and of the Bogota Basque club. He actively promoted relations between the Basque Country and Colombia. One of his sons, Aurelio Iragorri Valencia, the maternal grandson of the former president of the country Guillermo Leon Valencia, is also a former minister and at some point acting president and is currently the president of the U Party
Descendant of an Iragorri who came from Zeberio, Bizkaia to Colombia in the 18th century, Aurelio Iragorri Hormaza was very proud of his Basque origin and was one of the founders in the early years of the century of the Basque Center of Bogota. He maintained excellent relations with the Delegation of Euskadi for Colombia and the area, and supported the Colombian-Basque collaboration from his different positions, for instance the times Lehendakari Ibarretxe officially visited the country.
He also participated in “Iragorradas,” family reunions of the Iragorris in Colombia and other Latin American countries.
