Rafaela, Argentina. The 3rd Eguiazu family reunion in Argentina, descendants of Melchor Equiazu and Ruperta Arenaza from Eibar, took place last Sunday, October 13th in Rafaela, in the province of Santa Fe. The reunion was attended by some 100 family members coming from Santa Fe (Santa Fe); Paraná and Victoria (Entre Ríos), Resistencia (Chaco), Dolores and Escobar (Buenos Aires), Río Cuarto (Córdoba) and the City of Buenos Aires plus the local organizers.
Sergio Eguiazu, the motor behind the reunion told EuskalKultura.eus, that its goal year after year, is to maintain the number of attendees and their enthusiasm. “And we have been successful since again we have had more than 90 people attend, some traveling up to 700 kilometers, and I want to highlight the many young people who have joined us. We are very happy and we already have a date and place for 2020. It will take place on October 11th in Escobar,” said the reference from the Gure Ametza Basque Club in Rio Cuarto.
Something new this year was a tile. “A tile in the French style made by Melchor Eguiazu in his factory in Santa Fe on the shores of the river, that was destroyed by growth in 1910. Descendants of Melchor found some of these tiles, we think from the last ones made, in Goya, Corrientes, and gave them out as souvenirs,” Eguiazu said.
