Pamplona-Iruña. In the name of the Federation of Navarrese Centers in Argentina, the President of the Centro Navarro in Buenos Aires, Martin Urtasun, has put forth a lot of effort to make this new opportunity possible. This first course is now serving as a test to later be evaluated and decide the feasibility of the proposal. It begins from zero knowledge of the language and students and teachers are also working hard on learning some geographic and cultural references.
Proposed by the Federation of Navarrese Centers in Argentina, it is a joint project with the Directorate of Foreign Action, with the Minister of Citizen Relations of the Government of Navarre, and Euskarabidea, the Institute of Euskera in Navarre.
Classes began in January and will run through June. Students are divided into there groups, 19 students in all, the majority of which are from Argentina, but there is also a student from Uruguay. Classes are taught in Pamplona at the Euskarabidea Institute by Jela Martinez Urmeneta. These are live classes online, three times a week, and students do homework in order to practice and use what they have learned in class.
“We are happy, and it is a nice experience on both sides,” Pello Pellejero, Director of the Interregional Cooperation and Foreign Citizenship Service of the Directorate of Foreign Action told Euskalkultura.eus. “We have had to adjust the schedules, because there are currently four hours difference with Argentina-Uruguay. The online classes eliminates the geographical obstacles and provides a new opportunity for Navarrese men and women from abroad who want to learn Basque from wherever they are.”
