At least 18 universities in Europe, America and Asia participate in Euskaraldia 2020, thanks to the Etxepare Basque institute

Donostia-San Sebastián. The sociolinguistic exercise known as Euskaraldia is celebrating its second edition this year in the Basque Country as well as in its Diaspora, with the participation of Basque clubs and Basque communities as well as universities and lectureships all over the world where Basque language and culture is taught.  The event began on November 20th and concludes on December 4th with programs at many institutions in some cases  coinciding with the celebration of Euskera Day, December 3rd.

Even if the epicenter of Euskaraldia are the towns and cities of the European Basque Country, participation spreads around the world.  In 2020, students and teachers at lectureships will be part of Euskaraldia either playing the role of ahobizi, or belarriprest, in most cases, virtually.  Here is a list by country with the data available to date.

Finland
-At the University of Helsinki, short sketches will be uploaded to its Instagram @euskarahelsinkin account through December 4th.  The theme is differences between the Finish, Basque speakers and new Basque speakers.

Italy
-At the Universities in Foscari, Venecia, and in Bologna, on November 30th at 3:30pm, the communicator and YouTuber, Aiora Mujika will give a talk online entitled, “The Experience of a YouTuber in the Basque Language.”

Germany
-At the University of Goethe in Frankfurt, during the week of December 7-11, 2020, they will play the conversation game EkoLinguA, in collaboration with the Catalan lecturer. At the University of Leizpig, on December 14th, Yogurina Borova will give a talk via Zoom: “The Sociolinguistics of Cabaret.  Performers, Drag, and Minority Languages.” On December 3rd at the University of Konstanz, they will record a video with the student body and share i ton social media.

Chile
-Tomorrow, November 25th, at the University of Chile in Santiago, the talk “COVID-19 under the Gaze of a Basque Journalist.” On December 3rd at the Pontifical Catholic University they will show “What is Bertsolaritza,” and will also offer online talks by journalist Maider del Olmo as well as by a bertsolari.

Argentina
- AT the UNLP, University of La Plata, on December 1st students will enjoy a talk on Zoom with writer Juan Carlos Etxegoien “Xamar”.

Mexico
-At the UNAM, in Mexico City, on November 22nd there will be an online conversation with the directors of Euskaraldia; for International Day of Euskera, students will record a podcast about studying Euskera and the revitalization of the Basque language.

United States
-At the University of Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, Euskaraldia will the class topic until December 4th. At the University of Chicago, in collaboration with other lectureships, contents and challenges will be uploaded to an Instagram account created especially for the occasion. At Boise State University (Idaho) the radio program “Taupadak,” and the Department of Basque Studies will create a playlist to listen to during Euskaraldia.

Japan
-At the University of Tokyo the Basque Language and Culture lectureships will ask students to create videos introducing themselves, and describing the neighborhood in which they live.

Poland
-At the University of Poznan, using Teams, students will talk with Katarzyna Mirgos, Basque speaking Polish professor at the University of Mirgos, who recently published a book on Euskal Herria.  Gure. Historie z Kraju Basków. During the session, she will read passages from the book.  This is a bilingual activity Polish-Basque.

Catalonia
-At the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, there will be a digital Mintzobira that will include Basque students of Bartzelonako Euskal Etxea, the local Basque club

England
-At the University of Liverpool, the student body will hold an online conversation with English Basque speaker, Dylan Inglis, who is fluent in Batua as well as Xiberuan and Bizkaian dialects and also speaks hitano.

Basque language and culture lectureships at universities all over the world have created an Instagram account where content will be uploaded euskaraldiamunduan.
