Arrecifes, Argentina. The Basque club in Arrecifes is approaching its centennial as club president Laureano Villa Zabaleta reminded everyone in his welcoming remarks at the inauguration of the club’s 98th anniversary festivities. The birthday party was on February 22nd, and gathered some 130 guests. The event began with an Aurresku performed by Anabella Bilbao Valieta and Elisa Barroso Tognolotti to the former club presidents, along with a performance by the adult choir, Iruki Alaiak, and the txiki and intermediate dancers.
As part of the artistic number, the students from the singing workshop added humor appearing dressed up on the eve of carnival, with the theater workshop directed by Matias Acosta, that also performed two short skits.
Throughout the evening, there was music, games, sokatira, and a surprise when it was time to make a toast, after hearing “Txotx,” and the guests could approach a barrel of Txapela cider and celebrate the typical cider ritual and toast with this “authentic Basque drink.”
