The 11th edition of Zinemaldia Cat will begin this Friday. Zinemaldia Cat is the Basque film festival organized in the Barcelona by the Catalonian capital city's Basque club.  This year the festival will present a selection of Basque films that demonstrate that Basque cinemas has crossed borders: it tells not only local stories, but also stories from elsewhere, that are then shown at festivals around the world.  An example of this is the documentary Jai Alai Blues that focusses on the world of pelota in Florida.

Barcelona, Catalonia.   The Basque film festival in Catalonia is ready to break barriers this year, marking its 11th edition.  Organizers of the event assure that they are coming to breaking topics, that want to show that “it is not just film made by Basques for Basques, but a kind of film that want’s to arrive, and has arrived, all over the world.”

The festival begins this Friday and will run through February 26.  As every year, in addition to screenings there will also be colloquiums with the directors, actors, screenwriters, and producers of the films. In the Official Section there are 12 films competing, the majority of these debuted in Catalonia, and in some cases, they debuted at the International Film Festival in Donostia.  All of them are begin shown in the Girona Theaters.  Some these are Amama (Grandma), An Autumn in Berlin, Nola, or Gure Sorlekuaren Bila (Looking for our Birthplace)

The other side of the festival

The Basque club has also invested in providing more than film and provides small alternative jewels to the Catalan audience.  So this year, AlterZinemaldia will be repeated, with a film that was done jointly by 26 Basque directors Euskal Harriaren ABDak (The Basque Country’s ABDs), a Basque video contest and a cinematic tour of Barcelona led by Pere Vall, editor-in-chief at Fotogramas.

Also, as every year, there will be screenings of shorts from Kimuak that provide the possibility to get to know other Basque filmmakers in Barcelona.

Finally, for the children the Basque club will also have its own section thanks to TXO!
