Irisarri, Irizarri, Hirisarri, Yrisarri…There are many variations that have emerged over the centuries, but all come from the same source, the town of Irisarri in Lower Navarre. But this Saturday, anyone with the Irisarri last name is invited to meet at the Yrisarri Palace in Igantzi to enjoy a day dedicated to this last name. The program includes a visit of the palace, a talk on the history of the last name and a meal. Deadline to sign up is September 24th.
Igantzi, Nafarroa. The family reunion of the Irisarri last name will take place this Saturday in Irrisarriland, a complete adventure and rural resort that opened in 2014 in Igantzi, Navarre. The center of the complex is the Irisarri Palace, a building from the 16th century that has been restored and converted into a hotel. The palace of Irissari is the point of origin of the last name in this area, according to Joxe Elgorriaga manager of Irrisarriland. The name comes from the town of Irisarri in Baxenabarre, but as a last name is very common also in this area. Elgorriaga even says that many of the people with Irisarri as a last name come from his area.
The restoration of the building has respected its history and the facade conserves the original coat of arms of the Irisarris. “Our goal is to spread the history and the characteristics of this place and we would like to convert it into a meeting place and reference for Irisarris all over the world,” Elgorriaga says.
Also in the Diaspora
There is also a large number of Irisarris in the Diaspora that can be added to those in Euskal Herria. “In fact in Uruguay there is a group of Irisarris that get together every other year, according to their Facebook page,” Elgorriaga says.
The supporters of the get-together have spread the word on social media through a fake profile Juanes de Irisarri, the first person that appears in history with that name. He was the original of the saga that extends to America where some of its members, Antonio Jose de Irisarri and Alonso, reached the Viceroyalty of Guatemala Colony in the 17th century.
