Durango, Bizkaia. Last August, writer and bertsolari Uxue Alberdi (Elgoibar, 1984) and Scottish poet, Ciara MacLaverty, performed Throwing Voices along with Gaelic Harpist, Rachel Newton. The proposal aims to demonstrate and present, through music poetry, the richness of minority languages.  The Durangoko Azoka, that opened its doors yesterday will provide the opportunity to enjoy this joint Basque-Gaelic work.

“Throwing Voices,” will take place tomorrow at the Events Hall at the Durango Book Fair at 7pm. Along with Alberdi, harpist Rachel Newton will also read poems in Scottish Gaelic, as well as provide music for the day. They are hoping for the same size audience as they enjoyed at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

The “Throwing Voices” initiative was part of the Basque cultural program “Scotland Goes Basque” developed by the Etxepare Basque Institute throught 2019 in Scotland. Even if the production corresponded to the Edinburgh Literature Festival, some of the activities provided in Scotland returned to the Basque Country.  For example, the “Chejov vs. Shakespeare” initiative that put Basque writer, Iban Zaldua and Scotsman, James Robertson in contact was also part of the Literaktum Festival in Donostia after its debut at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. Another is “Atlantik 1050” a dance performance with Scottish and Basque dancers fusing both traditions that was also performed in Errenteria at the “Atlantikaldia” after debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
