John Etchemendy, who has served as Stanford University’s Provost for the last seventeen years stepped down yesterday, January 31, 2017. He will remain on campus this year to assist his replacement, Provost Persis Drell as well as President Marc Tessier-Lavigne. Attached is an article about his tenure at Stanford.
San Francisco, CA, USA. John Etchemendy, longest serving Provost in Stanford University history, stepped down from his office last Tuesday.
After 17 years in the position, Etchemendy has left quite a mark on the Stanford community, and academia in general. He will remain at Stanford to assist the incoming Provost and new President for the remainder of the year.
He will then enjoy a year of sabbatical, before returning to the classroom to teach philosophy, higher education and leadership.
Etchemendy, 64, was born in Reno, Nevada with Basque ancestry from the town of Arnegi, in Lower Navarre.
