The activities for the Day of the Immigrant are one of the main annual activities for the dantzaris of the Gazte Lurra group in Concordia, in the Argentinean province of Entre Rios. They participate in all of the events representing the Basque community with their dances. Now, after having participated in the “Previous to the Immigrant,” and the Torch March, they will perform at the Festival of the Immigrant this weekend.
Concordia, Argentina. The Basque community in Concordia and the Ibaiko Izarra Basque Club will once again represent the Basque Country at the provincial festival of the Immigrant, on September 11-13, at the city’s Convention Center. Every community, including the Basques, will have the opportunity to represent their dances and typical dishes among other cultural expressions.
The “Previous” and the Torch March
This weekend’s event will actually mark the end of a large program of activities that involved communities living in the city, gathered as part of the United Immigrants of Concordia. Among the events that were carried out, there was a “Previous to the Immigrant” festival that works as a teaser of the Provincial Festival. As every year, members of Gazte Lurra were present and gave a taste of the dances that they will perform this weekend, as well as those that they will do in October in Macachin at Semana Nacional Vasca (Argentinean Basque National Week).
On August 30 the dantzaris from Concordia attended another event as part of the program, the traditional Torch March. The queen of every community was present at the event that took place at the Town Hall and the Plazoleta of Communities where the inauguration of the Provincial Festival took place. The ceremony began with the National Anthem and presentation of flowers by the city and the United Immigrants of Concordia. There was also a religious event with the participation of representatives of the Catholic, Jewish and Orthodox communities.
Inter-community Tournament 2015
Activities the communities have been involved in include the soccer tournament that the “Kali Motxo,” team won, in the name of the Basque club. “It isn’t exactly a club team, but it includes many members and friends of the club. So when they asked if they could represent the club we were ok with that. And they won so Zorionak Gazteok!” Ibaiko Izarra said.
