The feature-length film will try to respond to why certain values like keeping one’s word, or a good work ethic are associated to the Basque immigrant in the popular imagination in Argentina. With this aim, testimonies that are not part of the community will be gathered to try and explain this phenomena from the point of view of the “other.” Anyone with anecdotes regarding these values associated to Basques can send them to be included in the documentary.  The two best anecdotes will receive prizes.

Buenos Aires, Argentina.   The proposal is coming from the Delegation of the Basque Government in Argentina and Mercosur and consists of contributing to the documentary “The Basque Word,” “anecdotes about Basques that are examples of the these values that in Argentina are habitually associated to Basques: hard work, keeping their word, effort, loyalty, solidarity, stubbornness, honesty…..”  The call is especially directed to people who aren’t Basque and who can tell their story from outside of the community.

In the words of Martin Jauregui, project director, “the film is trying to dive into the popular imaginary in Argentina to unravel why certain values are associated with the community. It will seek to build the story based on the testimony of those people who know stories, and who have been related to the Basques and their descendants, but who are not Basque themselves, or order to provide greater objectivity of the documentary.”

Anyone who may have an anecdote to add, can send it via email to: palabravasco@gmail.com or directly to the Delegation of Euskadi in Buenos Aires to provide information (tell the story, or send the data of the people who are featured) with the film’s producers deciding what will be included in its debut next austral winter. Among the anecdotes received, the best two will be chosen to receive prizes with a possibility of attending one of the days of filming; a bag of promotional material from the film; as well as tickets to attend its avant-premiere.

The director of the project, Martín Jauregui, was born in Argentina to a Basque family whose “amatxu,” used to speak to them in Basque.  Jauregui recognizes in the Basque language “a world that I belong to and of which I am proud.”  In regards to his extensive professional career, Jauregui directs documentary series on public TV, he is the author of the books Stories from My Country and Argentine Geographies, Myths, Stories and Secrets of a Country; as well as having participated in radio and TV programs, as well as working as a teacher, among other activities.
