The Juan de Garay Basque Argentine Foundation will celebrate its 35th anniversary this August with a festive gathering. The foundation, headquartered in Buenos Aires, has announced an intense program of activities at the beginning of this term that will continue to contribute to its founding purpose of “prolonging and projecting the tradition and customs of the Basque Country in Argentina.” The first of these events is the beginning of the 2018 term with a talk entitled “The Basques and the Great Navy,” by Jorge Beramendi next Tuesday.
Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Juan de Garay Foundation has developed an annual program of activities that is fundamentally comprised of weekly lectures for its members. The 2018 program will begin this Tuesday, March 6th, at 7pm and will run through December 4th. This Tuesday’s talk will talk about “the presence of fleets from Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia in the Spain’s Great Navy. The event will take place at the Foundation (Av. Roque Sáenz Peña 846, 1º, 102).
University, Book Fair, Trip to the Basque Country…
Besides it Tuesday activities, the Foundation has also announced a large array of proposals for this year. On the one hand, it will continue with courses at the Chair of Basque Language and Culture that it provides along with the Euzko Etxea in La Plata at the University of the East, coordinated by Dr. Carlos Irisarri.
The foundation will also represent the Basque community at the International Book fair in Buenos Aires, that will take place this year from April 26-May 14. As part of the Fair, they will present their books at the main event on May 10th. In regards to their publishing activities, they have informed that as they have done for the last 23 years, they will published three issues of their magazine “The Basque-Euskaldunak.” They will also publish the directory, “The Basques in Argentina,” that includes information on Basque last names in the country. Along with this, they also shared that the foundations’ library is open to the public and that it is also planning to hold trainings this year for those interested in heraldry and genealogy.
Besides the aforementioned academic activities and the cultural diffusion, the Foundation will also organize recreational activities with events in and outside of the capital that will facilitate visits to places related to the Basques. 35th Anniversary
The Foundation was created on August 16, 1983 and has been working for 35 years “to comply with the objectives of prolonging and projecting the traditions and customs of the Basque country in Argentina.” This year it is celebrating its anniversary with a gathering for members and friends.
