San Juan, Argentina. The “San Juan Adentro,” channel administered by Eduardo Ochoa, a member of the Eusko Etxea in San Juan, returns to examine the history of a Basque who left a profound legacy in the province of Cuyo. Nicolas Echezarreta from San Sebastian, arrived in Argentina in 1870, and after trying his luck in different destinations, settled in San Juan.
According to the magazine La Vasconia, Nicolás Echezarreta bought the land called Valle del Marquesado in 1884, 10 kilometers West of San Juan. “The next year he tried to return to the Basque Country but setbacks caused by capricious luck prevented him from going. Unable to return to his beloved town, he founded a town called San Sebastian on the land he purchased.”
As appreciated in the film, his contributions to the town were various but still evident. On land donated by the Donostiarra the Business School Nicolas Echezarreta would be built, as well as the N22 Mountain Infantry Regiment and the Betaña House.
In honor of his memory, one of the most important avenues in the town is named San Sebastian. The street begins at the church and ends at the Marquesado Club, both constructed on land donated by Echezarreta. These and other information related to Echezarreta can be found in a new installment of the Channel “San Juan Adentro.”
