Organized by the Society of Basque Studies, Eusko Ikaskuntza in Baiona, the international conference entitled “Art and the Basque Diaspora” will take place this week. The first session will be on Thursday at the Basque Museum in Baiona, and the second will move to Donostia to the San T elmo Museum, on Friday. In addition to Thursday’s session, the exhibit “Artistic Views of the Basque Diaspora” will also open, an exhibit that will tour the Basque Country until 2017.
Baiona, Lapurdi. Baiona and Donostia will be the sites this week of an international conference focused on the Basque Diaspora and Art, organized by Eusko Ikaskuntza. The project is part of the European Capital of Culture Donostia-San Sebastian 2016 and is also supported by the Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour and the University of the Basque Country.
The first day of the conference will take place at the Basque Museum in Baiona on Thursday and will gather international experts who will bring together their research on the Basque Diaspora and Art. In addition, the Museum will inaugurate the exhibit “Euskal diaspora artisten begiradan” (the Basque Diaspora through its artist's way of looking), a selection of works by contemporary artists on art and the Basque diaspora. The exhibit will be in Baiona until April 10.
The second day of the conference will take place in Donostia at the Museum San Telmo. The session will conclude with the screening of a western made by Russell Rouse in 1959 Thunder in the Sun, that includes Basque characters.
All proceedings of the conference will later be compiled and published in a book to provide a written record of this unprecedented event.
