Caracas, Venezuela. The monthly Basque-Venezuelan newsletter coordinated in Caracas by Pedro Javier Arriaga Aguirre published a special issue this week marking the 80th anniversary of he arrival, onboard the “Cuba,” of the first exiled Basques and Basque families to Venezuela fleeing Franco’s terror. Over 39 pages, the magazine reviews the history and includes stories of refugees who arrived aboard ships like the Cuba, Flandre, Bretagne or the Donibane Bigarrena.
With many photographs, this special issue of Jazoera pays tribute to those Basque families, including that of the family of Arriag’s father, Antonio Arriaga Guerriquechevarria, and his mother Maria Teresa Aguirre Bernaola who settled in Venezuela, and constructed a small “Euzkadi” in that Caribbean country from which they contributed and continue contributing to both homelands.
