Bariloche, Argentina. The city of Bariloche, in the province of Rio Negro, Patagonia, joins in the Basque club’s Aberri Eguna celebration every year. Local authorities and members of other communities will be present once again at the event that will take place on April 26th at the Place dedicated to the Communities on Moreno Street. During the ceremony the Argentinean flag and Ikurriña will wave and some words will be spoken regarding the celebration of the Basque homeland.
This is not the only activity that the Mendiko Euzko Etxea is organizing for this year’s Aberri Eguna celebration. Following the official acts, Basque club members will welcome everyone with a glass of wine to their newly renovated clubhouse, done by the members themselves over the last few years.
As Hector Graña, club member, explained to EuskalKultura.com, “differing from other years, we are now prepared to host people in the hall at our new clubhouse. We are still finalizing details, so that it will be the best experience possible. On Saturday the 19th, during Holy Week, we will raffle an Easter Egg as we have done in the past.” The chocolate egg weighs 3 kg, and is decorated with Basque and Argentinean flags.
Work for this year
When asked about 2014 activities, Graña said that they are hard at it, “the tasks and remodeling the hall have allowed us to concretize projects for the future like the dance group, meetings and practices. As always, the biggest challenge is the budget…but little by little we are achieving great things, and thanks to the groups of people that have provided us their selfless support, including labor, moral and material support,” he concluded.
After Aberri Eguna, club members will focus their attention on participating in new activities throughout 2014, among which the Festival of Communities in Bariloche, that always takes place in the spring in the southern hemisphere. These and other projects are discussed at member meetings that take place on Wednesdays at the Mendiko Euzko Etxea.
