A show of lights and sounds, in which the public’s participation is key, are some of the few details revealed about tomorrow’s official opening of the year of Donostia 2016 European Cultural Capital.  The ceremony was designed by Hansel Cereza, former member and founder of the Fura del Baus, and promises to surprise and excite.  Around 50,000 people are expected on both sides of the Urumea river. They will unite their voices in singing “Baga, biga, higa,” by Mikel Laboa in one of the highlight moments.

Donostia-San Sebastian.   The main event of the official opening of Donostia San Sebastian 2016 European Cultural Capital will take place tomorrow afternoon.  The event will begin at 8pm around the Maria Cristina Bridge that will become the center for the ceremony orchestrated by Hansel Cereza, former member of the well-known theater company, La Fura dels Baus.

Few details have been revealed about the ceremony that organizers have protected, in order to achieve a greater surprise and excitement of the audience and participants.  Some 900 people, from various communities, will participate in the ceremony, but around 50,000 spectators are expected on either side of the river, where they will have a privileged view and will also be able to actively participate in the ceremony.

One of the main moments will be the singing of one of Mikel Laboa’s well-known songs “Baga, biga, higa,” a song that has been present since the beginning of the project that has become a symbol of the same.

The opening ceremony is comprised of two parts; the first will be the actual inauguration ceremony, and the second will be “more fun.”  There will be a great technical display of lights, sounds, video and gadgets,” that will be projected on four giant-screens on the banks of the Urumea River.
