Iker Saitua, a PhD student at the UNR, will be the first speaker of this year’s Leisure Hour Club’s (LHC) program. A native of Getxo (Bizkaia, Basque Country), the historian will offer a glimpse into the past with a talk about Basque sheep breeders in Nevada, from the late nineteenth century to the 1960’s. “We like to know more about the history of Nevada and this is going to be a great opportunity,” told Dorothy Link, member of the LHC, to Euskalkultura.com. The presentation will be tomorrow evening at the Carson City Nugget Casino, just for members of the club.

Carson City, NV. The conference will be titled Becoming Basque-American: Basque Sheep Breeders and their Ethnic Legitimacy in Nevada (1890-1959) and will deal with a part of Saitua’s current dissertation on Basque laborers in sheep farming in Nevada. Before the talk there will be a private dinner and Saitua will begin his presentation at around 7:30 p.m.

Established in September 1896, the LHC is the oldest social organization in the capital city of the State of Nevada and aims at promoting culture and knowledge on a variety of issues ranging from science to arts, and from history to literature. In 1967, the club awarded as the Mother of the Year Basque immigrant Therése (Alphetche) Laxalt, mother of six children, among them the well-known writer Robert Laxalt and former Nevada governor Paul Laxalt.
