In Paris, you can buy Txuletas 24 hours a day, thanks to an initiative by Michel and Florence Pouzol, the owners of the L’ami Txulette butcher shop. These entrepreneurs have installed the first meat vending machine in Paris that is experiencing tremendous success. Michel has worked for several years in the Basque Country and his butcher shop there sells not only said Txuletas but also other products such as ham from Baiona, Basque dried sausage, etc. On egin!
Paris, France. “We are surprised by the echo that this machine has made. We have been interviewed from Australia, Bulgaria, and England…” Florence Pouzol, owner of L’Ami Txulette with her husband Michel, told EuskalKultura.com. “We weren’t the first in France, but we were the first in Paris to install one.”
Their butcher shop is located on Rue Charonne, in the East of Paris, and it is becoming well-known thanks to this initiative, that cost them 40,000 Euros, that allows clients to purchase a Txuleta (T bone steak), for example at any time of day, and even on Saturdays and Sundays, when the butcher shop is normally closed.
“In addition to Txuletas we also have an array of products: ham from Baiona, Basque dried sausage…,” she says. The butcher shop works with Basque products that they get directly from the producers in Iparralde. Florence mentioned a long list that includes: “Ox from Chalosse, and sometimes Herikko, pork from Bigorre, ham from Baiona, peppers from Espelette, Elizaldia products, Pierre Oteiza, Louis Ospital, Irouleguy, Hoberena, Montauzet Xipister Etxekoa….” The long list that denotes their relationship with the Basque Country and especially Lapurdi where Michel worked for many years.
“Basque products are very appreciated in Paris,” Florence said. “People know the area and are born there, or have been on vacation there and have good memories of having eaten well.”
