The Basque community in Venezuela had a special day last Saturday with the inauguration of a Basque Monolith that commemorates the Basque presence in the Valleys of Aragua. In 1768, a group of Basque decided to start growing Indigo, a key industry in the history of the area. This inauguration is the first on the Route of the Basques, an initiative of recovery of the historic Basque memory supported by the Federations of Basque Centers in Venezuela. Caracas, Venezuela. On November 12th the Basque Monolith, a monument in honor of the historic contributions of the Basques in the area was unveiled. The Monolith recalls that in 1768, a group of Basques decided to introduce the cultivation of Indigo to the area, a natural dye that was very successful and brought prosperity to the area.
A large group of Basques attended the tribute, some of them from neighboring Basque clubs in Carabobo and Caracas, who enjoyed a beautiful day of tourism and history.
This inauguration is the first activity in the “Route of the Basques” project supported by the Federation of Basque Clubs in Venezuela with the help of Odon Ulibarrena. The project will pass through various points in the country, holding tributes and events to commemorate the historic contribution of the Basque community in Venezuela.
