The Euzko Etxea’s fronton, in Santiago, was full of enthusiasm, laughs and yells on July 25 when it celebrated its first popular Olympics. Herri-Olinpiadak. The activity included participation by a lot of youth that competed in the sokatira, txingas, lokotzak and fun games like sack races. The great atmosphere will continue at the club this Sunday with the celebration of Iñaki Deuna.

In Valparaiso-Viña del Mar, the Basque club in the Fifth Region of Chile will celebrate on August 15 the Centennial of first Basque entity in the city, as well as the festival of San Ignacio, a traditional Basque festivities and one of the most-deeply rooted in the Basque-Chilean community.

Fifteen youth belonging to clubs in Argentina (11), Uruguay (2), Colombia (1) and Mexico (1) have been selected to participate in the 2015 Gaztemundu program in Vitoria-Gasteiz in October in conjunction with the World Congress of Basque Collectivities. These youth will join Basque club representatives from numerous countries at the conference.

The intensive Euskara Munduan course began last Saturday in Villa Maria, Cordoba (Argentina) and will run through Saturday at noon leading to the teachers to a meeting as part of the activity. Supported by HABE and organized by FEVA and the local Euzko Etxea, the barnetegi will gather students and teachers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

In accordance with the club statutes, Eusko Kultur Etxea - Casa de la Cultura Vasca in Buenos Aires better known as Eusketxe held elections for its board of directors. Maria Elena Etcheverry de Irujo and Ollo was reelected as president as well as Aitor Alava as vice-president.

Next week, the city of Santiago will be converted into the center for various activities with a Basque flavor, thanks to Semana Vasca organized by theColectividad Vasca de Chile group in Santiago. There will be film, talks about Euskera, a pelota tournament, a choir get-together, and on Sunday they will celebrate the feast of San Ignacio of Loyola.

Even if he was born in France (Montepellier, 1977), Mike de Elguezabal has spent his whole life in Venezuela, or better said, a large part of it. His degree is in Biology from the University of Cumaná, he is father and a passionate for our culture (admitted fan of jotas, Benito Lertxundi and Mikel Laboa). He came to Navarre to study with a grant, and finally stayed here and got his Masters from the UPNA. Article published in the “Diario de Noticias.”

Author Dolores Redondo (Donostia, 1969) will begin an international tour at the end of the month to present her successful trilogy on Baztan (Destiny), three crime novels that mix police trauma and Basque mythology with the beautiful scenery that is the Navarran valley. On July 28 she will be in Mexico where the local baztandarra community is anxiously awaiting her.

Boiseko Ikastola inaugurated its new location last Monday with new headquarters and facilities in Boise, inaugurated by Basque Mayor, Dave Bieter, who attended along with a large group of Ikastola parents, teachers, collaborators and friends. Remember that the school opened its doors 17 years ago in a space rented from St. Paul’s Catholic Student Center on the Boise State University campus, where it has been until now.
