Basque born in Argentina, Xabier Zubillaga has been creating projects his entire life to unite the Basque Country and its Diaspora. He sees potential, but not as much boldness and support on the part of institutions.

Following yesterday’s format, the second session of the World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad, will begin with various talks in the morning, focusses primarily on Euskera (Euskera Munduan, celebrating 25 years in Argentina, and the Mintzanet program); Memoria Bizia that gathers oral testimonies of members of Basque communities; and gender equality in Basque clubs. In the afternoon members of the Advisory Council will be elected, and several books on the Diaspora will be presented.

The first concert on the program will take place tomorrow, Friday, at the Chapel of the College of Euskal Echea in the capital, while the others will take place in two touristic destinations in the south of the country, Ushuaia and Iguazu. During the performances the singers will perform a varied repertoire with sacred pieces as well as Basque folkloric and international pieces.

Today, is the first day of the World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad that is being held through Friday at the Montehermoso Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The day will begin with a welcome from the Basque Government’s Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Marian Elorza, after which Lehendakari Urkullu will officially open the proceedings and them will give the floor to Kingsley Aikins, an Irish expert on Diaspora and director and consultant of Diaspora Matter, who will give the keynote speech.

Eusko Etxea in New York has prepared an extensive program of activities focused on diversity and sexual freedom that will take place Friday through Sunday as part of the “Diversity Weekend.” Among these are film, exhibits, presentation of Miradas Atrevidas (Bold Looks) and their annual Gayaldi celebration.

The 6th World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad will begin tomorrow in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Representatives from some the 25 countries that have Basque clubs have been invited under the slogan “Diasporizatu” (Diasporize). The Basque Government’s Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Marian Elorza, will welcome the participants tomorrow with Lehendakari Urkullu formally open the Congress. Kingsley Aikins, Irish expert will give the keynote speech. The event will conclude on Friday and will take place at the Palacio Monhermoso in Araba’s capital.

Last March, a group of students from Mondragon University traveled to California in hopes of getting to know the world of the Diaspora and strengthen ties with Basques in the American West. During the trip they conducted several interviews with various members of the Basque community and now would like to convert those into a documentary to publicize the testimony of these Basques in California. The work is entitled Enbaxadoreak (Ambassadors) which has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise the money necessary to carry out the project.

Thanks to the young Euskal Txokoa Basque club, the Basque community in San Martin de los Andes was able to enjoy activities held thanks to the support and participation of members of the Euskal Etxea Basque club in San Nicolas and the Union Vasca in Bahia Blanca. Cooks from San Nicolas taught a cooking workshop, and the dantzaris from Bahia Blanca entertained at the Basque Taberna with their dances and inviting the audience to join in.

This afternoon the sessions of the 2015 Gaztemundu program will conclude. The Basque Government, through its Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad has carried out them since September 27. Now, participants, the fifteen youth from Basque clubs around the world, will join in the VI World Congress of Basque Collectivities starting tomorrow. The Congress will be held at the Montehermoso Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz through October 9.

Fans of Basque literature in Barcelona will now have a new place to get together, with the beggining of the sessions of Irakurle Kluba, a book club for Basque literature. It was created by the Basque teachers at the Official Language School, at the UB and UAB universities and the Basque club along with HABE. They will get together once a month to discuss works like The Accordionist’s Son, Bilbao-New York-Bilbao, or A Streetcar to SP.
