With the 6th World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad concluded, EuskalKultura.com went to the Directorate of Basque Communities Abroad to get their opinion on how the Congress and Gaztemundu 2015 went. In the words of director, Asier Vallejo Itsaso, things can always be done better, but they believe that Gaztemundu went very well, and the Congress also went well, while considering the suggestions that they have received in regards to the format and some improvements for future editions. The Etxepare Institute has opened an urgent call for applications for a Basque language and culture lecturer at the Sorbonne Nouvelle III University in Paris for this academic year, 2015-2016. The budget for the position, including salary, is 25,000 Euros. Anyone interested should have a Basque degree (C1) and a French degree (B1).

Entitled, ‘Mi viaje: De Nuevo Leon to the New York island,’ (My Journey from Nuevo Leon to New York Island) Mexican musician Sonia de los Santos (Monterrey, 1982) has taken her first step as a solo artist. A New Yorker herself, for the last ten years, she talks about her experiences as an immigrant on the record, as well as her love for her country, and her passion for the different cultures in the world, including the Basque culture. In fact, she included a cover of the late Mikel Laboa’s ‘Txoria txori.’on the album. “I heard the song for the first time on YouTube, performed by Joan Baez, and I loved it,” said she in a conversation with EuskalKultura.com. “I’ve covered it with much respect and heart.”

It is about a panoramic vision of emigration from Navarre to the new world, open to anyone interested in the topic. The symposium will try to offer an informative approach to this emigration with testimonies and studies on the experiences of these emigrants. The meeting is part of the events being held on the 40th anniversary of the book Amerikanuak. Basques in the New World. This event will be followed by another conference on October 15-16 at the University of the Basque Country.

The San Miguel (Aralarko Mikel Deuna) festivities have become a main attraction at the Denak Bat in Mar del Plata in the month of October, not only because it runs for two weeks, but also because it includes a large part of the activities that the club develops. This year, the program began on September 30 with a Pelota Championship and will conclude on October 17h with a performance by the club’s dancers.

Friday was the third and final day of the 6th World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad. During the work session in the morning, delegates debated and agreed on the themes and proposals to include in the Four-Year plan that will be presented to the Basque Government. Then participants moved to the Lehendakaritza and Lehendari Urkullu greeted each participant one by one, before addressing the crowd and introducing William Douglass who did the closing speech. Lehendakari Urkullu officially closed the proceedings to conclude the Congress.

Euskera and gender equality in Basque clubs were the first topics that opened day two of the 6th World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad. Besides attending the presentations of various book on the Diaspora, delegates also elected three representatives to the Lehendakari’s Advisory Council on Basque Communities.

Today is the last day of the 6th World Congress of Basque Communities Abroad being held since last Wednesday at the Montehermoso-Oihaneder Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Yesterday, elections were held for three new Basque club representatives on the Advisory Council. The council may meet in December to discuss topics that were raised during the Congress.

This past Saturday, the Ontario Basque Club celebrated its third annual Mikel Deuna or Saint Michael’s festivity. “Many of our ancestors were baptized in the church of San Miguel, one of the Basque saints, that’s why we thought of celebrating it,” explained Lisa Corcostegui, president of the Euskal Etxea, to EuskalKultura.com. A little more than 60 people gathered at the Club to enjoy mass, dances, and lunch.

The 6th Congress of World Communities Abroad was inaugurated yesterday with a few words from Lehendakari Urkullu at the Montehermoso-Oihaneder Euskararen Etxea Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz. After an Aurresku, joining the Lehendakari at the head table were, Marian Elorza, Secretary General of Foreign Affairs, Asier Vallejo, Director of Basque Communities Abroad, and Irish expert Kingsley Aikins who gave the keynote speech.
